Bebop Spoken There

Alicia Hall Moran: “I would go to hear Jason's band play and I'd say "Y'all hot!" But they came out wearing these casual, saggy outfits, putting music out with these not-attractive outfits like they were going on interviews for jobs they didn't want.” – (DownBeat May 2018).

Shabaka Hutchings: “You have to get the funding to come here [New York], and then there's getting the proper visa to play, which costs more than we get paid.” – (DownBeat May 2018).

Preview: Crooners - Whitley Bay Playhouse - February 16

Judging by the press release below, this is one helluva show. Following the links and watching the trailers has only served to whet my appetite. Whitley Bay Playhouse on Friday, February 16 and Billingham Forum the following Friday are the local venues and I can't wait. This is more than just another Rat Pack show. It's a happening! - Lance.

(Press release)
This modern world does not always seem the place for men of style and vigour. Men with a penchant for sentiment, romance and charm. Men who own tap shoes.
Crooners follows the story of three very British gentlemen who exude the characteristics of a crooner; suave, self-assured, stylish, as they defend the role of a crooner in our modern world. By the very same nature, it is not always obvious that these characteristics are adopted quite so well by the quintessentially British. Cue a splendiferous injection of British comedy. Tongue firmly in cheek. And an Outrageous injection of Big Band Swing.
This rip-roaring comedy musical has been wowing audiences with its witty and exhilarating show full of satirical energy, hilarious one-liners, laugh out loud silliness and superb musical numbers.
Featuring the outstanding and uncompromising live, on stage musicianship of the 9-piece band ‘The Mini Big Band’, these Crooners feature songs from Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr, Matt Monro, Nat King Cole and Bobby Darin. Expect some Lady is a Tramp, Come Fly With Me, L.O.V.E, When You’re Smiling, Fly Me To The Moon, Beyond The Sea, Mack The Knife and many more…

Submissions for review

Whilst we appreciate the many emails, texts, messages and other communications we receive requesting album/gig reviews on BSH, regrettably, we are unable to reply to them all other than those we are able to answer with a positive response.
Similarly, CDs received by post will only be considered if accompanied by sufficient background material.
Finally, bear in mind that this is a jazz-based site when submitting your album.

Bebop Spoken Here -- Here, being the north-east of England -- centred in the blues heartland of Newcastle and reaching down to the Tees Delta and looking upwards to the Land of the Kilt.
Not a very original title, I know; not even an accurate one as my taste, whilst centred around the music of Bird and Diz, extends in many directions and I listen to everything from King Oliver to Chick Corea and beyond. Not forgetting the Great American Songbook the contents of which has provided the inspiration for much great jazz and quality popular singing for round about a century.
The idea of this blog is for you to share your thoughts and pass on your comments on discs, gigs, jazz - music in general. If you've been to a gig/concert or heard a CD that knocked you sideways please share your views with us. Tell us about your favourites, your memories, your dislikes.
