Promenading Porter.

(Previews by “Radio” Russell).
Friday 8 August, Radio 3, 10:15pm, Gregory Porter**** joins Clare Teal in BBC Proms 2014. The late night Prom is a Battle of the Bands. The Count Pearson Proms Band slugs it out with the Duke Pearson Proms Band. Pianist James Pearson’s day job as Artistic Director at Ronnie Scott’s takes a back seat as he goes into bat for Basie, similarly Clare Teal’s MD, pianist Grant Windsor, takes guard for Ellington. If you want to be there in person join the queue outside the Royal Albert Hall – admission is ‘on the night’ at £5.00. If you can’t be there, listen to Radio 2 or Radio 3, then on Sunday 17 August watch BBC television for a delayed broadcast of the occasion.
Hear Pearson and Windsor discussing their Proms showdown on Clare Teal, Sunday 3 August, Radio 2 (9:00pm).
Other listening highlight’s include Jazz Record Requests, Saturday 2 August, Radio 3 (5:00pm). One request is for the excellent Mary Halvorson (heard recently in Newcastle on a short European tour). Trish Clowes can be heard as one of Radio 3’s New Generation Artists (Sunday, 11:15pm) and on Monday, Radio 3’s Jazz on 3 presents Picardie, the Westbrook’s reflections on the First World War. Also on Monday, in addition to the ever-excellent Paul Jones (Radio 2, 7:00pm), the harp man stays up late to broadcast the first of six programmes – A Beginner’s Guide to the Blues - over on BBC 6 Music (2:00am Tuesday).
Tuesday evening, 7:00pm, Jamie Cullum (Radio 2) includes an archive gem featuring the Teddy Wilson Trio at Poplar Town Hall. The wonderful Moira Stuart pockets a repeat fee with her four-part celebration of Strong and Sassy – Inspiring Women of Jazz on Radio 2, Thursday (10:00pm). The first programme looks at Lena Horne.
Finally, on Friday 8 August, Any Questions? (Radio 4, 8:00pm). Any Questions? Yes, one of the panelists is none other than Soweto Kinch!
**** There is a two page feature on Gregory Porter in the current issue (dated Aug. 2) of Radio Times.
